Pay Stubs for 1099 Contractors

If you invoice clients directly or work through a platform as a contractor, you don't get a W-2 pay stub, but landlords and lenders often ask for one anyway. Here's the difference, and how to document contractor income properly.

Contractor income isn't employee income

A W-2 pay stub shows gross wages, tax withholding, and net pay for an employment relationship. A 1099 contractor relationship doesn't work that way: the IRS is explicit that businesses generally don't withhold or pay taxes on payments to independent contractors. You're paid for work performed, typically without withholding, and you handle your own estimated taxes separately. Trying to force contractor income into an employee-style pay stub misrepresents how you're actually paid.

What a contractor income document should show

Instead of simulating employee withholding you never had, GetMyStub's contractor flow documents what actually happened: who paid you, for what period, and how much, all in the same recognizable stub format landlords and lenders are used to reviewing, without pretending you had payroll taxes withheld you didn't.

Where this comes up

This isn't a hypothetical gap. Rideshare and delivery drivers, freelance designers and developers, consultants, and anyone invoicing clients directly all run into the same problem when a landlord or lender's application form assumes everyone gets a W-2 pay stub.

Government data puts a real number on this: 11.9 million Americans were independent contractors on their main job in July 2023, 7.4% of total employment, and 80.3% of them said they preferred that arrangement over a traditional job. This isn't a gap in the system that traps people; it's a paperwork mismatch for a way of working most contractors chose.

Keeping it honest

This document formats the payment data you provide. It doesn't verify with your clients that the payments happened. The verification code lets a recipient confirm the document matches what GetMyStub generated and hasn't been edited since; the accuracy of what you enter is on you.
