How to Get a Pay Stub for a Rental Application
Most landlords and property managers ask for recent pay stubs before approving a lease. Here's what they're actually checking for, and how to put together a document that holds up.
What landlords are actually checking for
A pay stub isn't the point: steady, verifiable income is. Landlords use it as a proxy for your ability to pay rent consistently, and they typically want to see a few consecutive pay periods that match the income you claimed on your application, not just a single number.
That scrutiny isn't paranoia. In a 2024 survey of apartment operators, the National Multifamily Housing Council found that 84.3% had seen applicants falsify or fabricate pay stubs, employment references, or other income documentation in the prior 12 months. That's exactly the gap a public verification code is built to close.
If you don't get a traditional pay stub
Freelancers, 1099 contractors, and gig workers often run into a wall here: the platforms and clients paying them don't issue anything that looks like a standard pay stub, even though the income is entirely real. That gap is exactly why services like this exist, not to invent income, but to format real income data into the standard document landlords expect to review. It's not a small population, either: government data counts 11.9 million Americans as independent contractors on their main job as of July 2023, before counting gig and part-time freelance income on top of that.
If a loan officer is asking instead of a landlord, the documentation question looks a little different — see pay stubs for a loan application.
Generating the document
You enter your employer or business details, pay frequency, and compensation. GetMyStub runs that through a real federal and FICA withholding calculation, not placeholder numbers, and produces a set of consecutive pay stubs formatted the way a landlord expects to see them.
What this document does and doesn't prove
A generated pay stub is a formatted presentation of the data you provide, similar to filling out a template yourself. GetMyStub certifies that the document was generated on a specific date and hasn't been altered since. That's what the verification code confirms. It does not certify that the underlying income is real; you're responsible for the accuracy of what you enter.
